Tatiana Cocsanova missing Panamerican championships due to injury
«At 2022 Canadian Championships my S1 joint herniated (disc herniation) and trapped my sciatic nerve which left me bed bound for 3 weeks, with no sleep for two weeks because of excruciating pain.
Following this event, many trusted people by my side were very sceptical and didn't believe me. Even my own friends and were talking behind my back saying I'm just pretending...
Recovery was very rushed because of very important competition that followed Championship in about 1,5 months: Commonwealth Games 2022. 2 weeks with no sleep bed bound, 1 week I slowly started to learn how to walk again, 2 weeks slowly started physical activity, 1 week started Gym related physical activity and 2 weeks were left for my preparation. It was hard and pain was a lot.
Eventually it stopped, but not for long. I kept having episode upon episode of small bulges here and there. But they were short and fast. Past after 1 day of rest.
Unfortunately this time, bulge is serious. It has been bothering me since beginning of season.
Elite Canada itself was horrible for me... Along with my back, I was also battling sickness with high fever and bunch of other small injuries. I tried my best to ignore and numb pain in my back with painkillers, but even they didn't help. I thought I needed to do my job as #1 gymnast of the country, so I put my health at risk. Which was completely wrong and I shouldn't have done that...
Following Elite Canada, pain only got worse and training less often. I stopped training completely month ago, stopping to attempt to ignore pain.
Bulge is back and it hurts, situation is worsening and if I keep going, it will fully develop into disc herniation again and it will have lifelong effects on my body.
Season is ended for me for now, at least until I fully recover. Decision was very hard and I kept putting it off until I couldn't anymore.
While everybody I compete against keeps training, I have to ask my 50 y. o. parents to put my socks on for me because I can't do it myself, as 20 y. o. young professional athlete...
And still through all this, same people keep talking about me «faking it», which hurts, but I can't change other people's values and personalities. I need to focus on what I can change and that's my recovery.
Remember: you have your body for rest of your life. Sports will stop one day. Body you build or destroy with sport stays».
