The Taipei 101, also known as the Taipei World Financial Center, was the worlds tallest building until 2010. Built in the Xinyi District of Taipei, Taiwan, groundbreaking started in 1999 and the Taipei 101 was officially completed on the 31 December 2004. The Taipei 101’s postmodern design style incorporates traditional Oriental styles with modern glass, steel and concrete design. The principle architect was Chu-Yuan Lee along with C. P. Wang of C.Y. Lee & Partners. The Taipei 101 has 101 floors as well as 5 basement levels giving it an architectural height of 509m (1671 ft) with the top floor being 439m (1441 ft) high. The Taipei 101 includes a mall, indoor & outdoor observatory desks, sundial and record setting high speed elevators which can move at up to 60 km/h (37 mph). The Taipei 101 has a 660 tonne tuned mass (seismic) damper installed to reduce mechanical vibrations. The eight delineated exterior sections of the building represent the auspicious number eight.
