Many scholars put different reasons on how Ethiopia was able to defeated it Italy. The following are some of the reasons:
⚫️Italy underestimated the military power of Ethiopia. Italy presumed that it will get a very small . In fact, they would not have escaped from the defeat even if they had made a correct assumption.
⚫️Topography - the Adwa mountain has a very difficult Topography which favored Ethiopian’s.
⚫️Every Ethiopian starting from those on the battle ground to contributed its part. As the Italy fought on the land of Ethiopia, they had no idea where to find there planed areas. So, they asked those (Ethiopians) whom they got on the way. Those whom they asked gave them the wrong direction intentionally. This had a huge impact on distracting the Italian military.
⚫️Tayitu’s genius ideas- Tayitu, who was the Wife of Emperor Menilik II, was one of those who took the Lion share in the war. Apart from taking part in the war, she came up with very smart ideas to morally discourage the Italians and weaken them down.
⚫️ Ethiopia was alreadya christian state. Colonizers in other parts of Africa used christian missionaries (Gospel preachers) as a tactic to easy achieve their dream. However, this couldn't work in Ethiopia because it was one of the few countries in the world who accepted Christianity very early.
⚫️Unity unity unity! - By the time Italian’s came to colonize, Ethiopia had the territory it has now. Not only this but also, citizens from every part of the country to face the Italians.
⚫️Above all, though Ethiopians had traditional weapons and less military skill than Italy, the people had everything else! They had the determination to die for their county! Dying will defending your country was taken as huge privilege. They had God! What do you need more than this to win a battle? #AdwaforAfricans
