In a fitting, movie-like ending to a thrilling men’s high jump final, Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi and Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim agreed to become joint Olympic champions.
After both competitors failed to clear 2.39m at Tokyo 2020, and had identical records clearing 2.37m, they accepted officials' offer of being dual gold medalists. Barshim and Tamberi shared their mutual appreciation for one another, and the obstacles they overcame to compete in Tokyo to the media.
“It is unreal, it is crazy. I am so happy, man. It was the only thing missing (from my high jump career). Now, I am complete, I am so happy," Barshim said. "It is amazing, man. To share it with Marco is an amazing feeling. It is a great feeling. I’m really happy." (📷 Christian Petersen/Getty Images)
