流行文化是“垃圾”吗?
To Adorno, pop culture is a dangerous dominating ideology.
It has successfully dominated the mass, i.e., us, insofar as we’ve been “trained” to enjoy very specific expressions of art. To Adorno, we’ve been fed the same cultural commodities repeatedly that over time, we’ve been culturally conditioned to enjoy certain forms of art. Importantly, it also means that other forms of “unpopular culture” will be unintelligible to us — we would have no idea what to think about them.
Over time, this repetitive consumption of pop culture commodities will erode our capacity to think beyond the cultural ideology of pop culture. We will reject “unpopular art” and exclusively consume popular culture. So, when Adorno argues that popular culture stifles creativity and individuality, he describes this social phenomenon: we lose our ability to think beyond popular culture.
In short, Adorno thinks that pop culture is a dominating ideology. It forms the unconscious basis of our desires for cultural commodities. It tells us what sorts of music and films we ought to enjoy. It locks us in a prison where we can only perceive popular music and popular film as “good music” and “good film.” Pop culture provides us with a doctrine of value that, like any other doctrine, subdues and substitutes our capacity to think for ourselves.
