Catchpenny prints were cheap, mass-produced sheets printed on one side on unfolded sheets of paper which were popular in Holland and throughout Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries. As they were sold for one or more cents, they became known as catchpenny prints. Catchpenny prints covered all kinds of subjects. Images of ships, soldiers, animals, tools, crafts, people in other countries, board games, social satire, narrative prints with fairy tales, murder stories etc. The quality of the paper was mostly poor and therefore so was the quality of the images. Catchpenny prints were usually printed with cheap monochrome ink designed to keep the price low. This often made them very popular within the poorer sections of society irrespective of literacy.
