The Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve is a 56,259-ha biosphere that lies within rugged forested mountains about 100 km northwest of Mexico City. It was created to protect the wintering habitat of the Monarch Butterfly, which is perhaps the best known of all North American butterflies.
