United States v. Bhagat Singh Thind (1923) - In 1906, Congress banned all immigrations except for that of “free white persons”. A Sikh man argued that Indians were actually the descendants of Indo-Aryans and therefore white. The case was laughed out of the Supreme Court due to the common sense understanding that however “white” the original high-caste Brahmins were, they were manifestly non-white by the 20th century
