On July 15, 1862, the newly completed ironclad, CSS Arkansas, engaged Union ships posted around Vicksburg.
Among the ironclad’s crew were some 60 Missouri artillerymen. A fight between the Arkansas and the Federal gunboat Tyler and ironclad Carondelet caused heavy damage to the latter and dozens of Union casualties along with about 25 killed and wounded Confederates.
The Arkansas the forced her way through the Federal fleet to Vicksburg. A few weeks later she was sent to participate in the Confederate attack on Baton Rouge where she was damaged and scuttled.
