Mel Gibson was the first winner in 1985, and four men were chosen twice: Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Johnny Depp and Richard Gere. Nearly half were chosen while they were in their 30s, 30% in their 40s and only four men were chosen in their 50s. The youngest winner was Tom Cruise, who was 27 in 1990.
The vast majority are actors who hail from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland or Australia, raising questions about why the list features fewer Latin Americans, Africans or Asians. The same question can be asked for those over 55, with two exceptions: Sean Connery, elected at 59 in 1989 and Harrison Ford, at 56 in 1998.
