Termites of the species Neocapritermes taracua from French Guiana have a unique defense mechanism where they "explode" to protect their colony. These termites carry toxic "backpacks" containing the BP76 enzyme, which remains in a stable form until mixed with secretions during a threat. The enzyme's copper-based structure and sugar molecules keep it stable until needed. Once triggered, the explosive reaction releases a deadly toxin, immobilizing or killing attackers, though the termite itself perishes in the process.
